Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Visualizes how much data each directory holds
  • Point-and-click interface

Cons

  • Isn't a complete cleanup utility
  • Might be too simple for experienced power users

TreeSize provides a simple graphical interface that allows users to find which files are taking up the most space on their storage devices.

Those who boot off of volumes on a smaller SSD enjoy a huge boost in terms of speed, but their chosen medium often fills up quite quickly. The same often goes for users on larger electromechanical hard disks, because data does have a tendency to build up over time. If this condition sounds at all familiar to you, then you should find that TreeSize can help you drastically reduce the amount of crud you have stored on your drive.

By itself, TreeSize isn't really a standalone cleanup utility. You'll want to use it alongside the built-in tools that come with Windows or a third-party app that's designed to scan your drive and eliminate cache files and other garbage. Once you've cleaned up everything you can with an automatic pass, TreeSize will let you know what what's left over.

Best of all, it doesn't have a very large footprint itself. The app takes up next to no space on its own, and whatever it does take up will be more than made up for by the amount of space you reclaim the first time you ever run it.

Don't be surprised if you find a number of resources you didn't even realize were taking up space. TreeSize searches through everything stored on a volume, so it'll report back about everything from old video projects to applications you no longer need.

There's a good chance that it will also find older temporary files that got stored inside of application directories. While cleanup software normally finds and removes temporary files, these apps usually can't search through every provisioned space on your drive.

Unix users will probably remember a command called du, which gives a terminal readout of how much space is used on each disk in a system. TreeSize was developed to act as a Windows version of this command, albeit with a more user-obsequious look to it. If you're an accomplished command line aficionado, then you might find the interface too simplistic.

On the other hand, those who find that their eyes glaze over when presented with a classic DOS prompt will find that the app is extremely helpful. This is especially true of anyone who might do a great deal of image editing. Since the app is capable of finding all the leftover fragments from these kinds of activities, it should prove attractive to users who have hobbies that are disk intensive.

Gamers should appreciate this fact as well, since TreeSize will show them which directories are full of old save files they no longer need. It even offers the same look and feel that they're used to.
